Welcome to our blog COMENIUS IES MUNGIA

WHO WAS COMENIUS??????

Jan Amos Komenský   Comenius,   (1592 - Amsterdam 1670) He was a theologian, philosopher and an educator. He is considered the father of modern education. He developed the concept of universal education, and established the basic educational principals that are still in use today.

Comenius was known in whole Europe for his work Didáctica Magna. The first edition was published in 1630. His concept of education can be captured in one sentence: education is for everybody. Comenius introduced a radical new idea: women are as intelligent as men, and deserve to be educated as well. He also advocated education for handicapped people.
In terms of educational style, Comenius believed that students should think and reflect before asking questions.  He believed that children learn from each other and therefore learn better in groups than in isolation.

He underlined the importance of the parents role in education because the kind of education that the children will have in society is in their hands.  He criticized the schools of his time calling them mind killers, and he substituted positive reinforcement for the physical punishments that were prevalent.

In the XVII century, Comenius invented the idea of a study plan that outlined the role and arrangement of subjects within school system. He outlined a system of schools that is the exact counterpart of the existing American system of kindergarten, elementary school, secondary school, college and university.

In addition to his belief that education must be universal he believed education was a life-long process.  Comenius was, moreover, a man whose ideas were ahead of his time, and the influence of his work can still be felt today.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING SCHOOL IN IES MUNGIA

The Vocational Training School in Mungia has enrolled this year in one of the Comenius programs called EARN: Entrepreneurship A Richness from Nature. This is a European project that lasts for two years (2011-2013). It is education-based and is aimed to increase European identity and the prestige of vocational training students and teachers. Teachers and students will learn together in shared experiences.

This project is carried out by six European countries: Cypress, Poland, Italy Spain, Hungary and Portugal. These countries will work together to reach common goals.

The project develops students skills in different areas:

  • language competence in English,
  • business techniques
  • Use of new technology
  • Cooperation as a tool to increase market efficiencies.
  • Social skills such as travelling, meeting people from other countries, respect for other cultures, etc.
  • Environmental consciousness
  • European consciousness.

The country members will have to create a multinational business run by students. The products will be related to wine, olives and their derivatives. The students will be in charge of the production, marketing, sales and promotion.

There are going to be six meetings, one in each country. The first one took place in September in Cypress, the second one in February in Portugal, the third one will be next April in Hungary, the fourth before the end of this year in Italy, the fifth to Poland the final meeting will be in Mungia next year.

We hope that teachers, students and the whole school community make this effort a great success.
